Finding New Perspectives

My initial perspective was too limited. Then I laid on the floor and everything changed. What began as a struggle became remarkable when I remembered to think like a photographer. It’s a way of looking at the world that can expand your success in business and life. Perspective and focus are the key. On assignments, the questions in the forefront of my mind are what different perspectives can I look at this from, [...]

Headshot or a Portrait

A portrait can be cropped to create a headshot, but not the other way around. Do you want a headshot or a portrait? The distinction is often missed. The term “Headshot” has become a catch-all phrase that limits how we think about photography. How often do you hear or say, “I need a new headshot,” or “send me your headshot?” The traditional headshot is functional and [...]

Ask Questions

The road to success is paved with questions. A lot of questions. My go to question begins with, “I WONDER IF?” I wonder . . .     If there’s a better way to get this done?     If they understood my ideas?     If I’m hearing them correctly?     If I could find more common ground to better understand someone?     If there are better ways to communicate [...]

Total Eclipse

If you ever have the opportunity to see a total solar eclipse, take it. It was a profoundly awe-inspiring experience that I was not emotionally prepared for. I watched this eclipse from the Central Oregon countryside in 2017. Seeing the sun blotted out, a black hole in the sky filled me with wonder, and a deep reverence for life. When the light began to dim, the [...]

Podcast Environmental Portrait

Podcasting can be serious business, especially when the topic is cyber security. That’s the story I wanted this portrait to tell. Camille Morhardt is the host of Intel’s InTechnology podcast. For this assignment the client wanted a breadth of images. Photographs of Camille with warm and inviting smiles were taken outside. For the serious and thought-provoking shots, her studio was the perfect spot to convey the podcast brand. Her eyes instantly capture the [...]

Too Much Light

Bright afternoon sun from the windows behind the stage threatened to blow out the detail on most of this image. The problem wasn’t too much light. The problem was too much light from one direction. Since I couldn’t turn down the sun, I turned up a lot more light from the other side. Professional Photographers come prepared for all situations and work seamlessly in mixed light under any conditions. [...]

Balance

We all need balance in our lives. Some more than others. Maybe not as graceful as an acrobat, balance plays an important role in my corporate photography. Great balance gives me access to great perspectives. For event and conference photography, balance allows me to move quickly and fluidly through crowds and narrow spaces, with two heavy cameras swinging from my body, often in the dark. Photographers need to be [...]

Backstage Pass

While many yearn for a backstage pass to their favorite bands, photographers yearn for backstage access to their favorite corporate conventions and events. It is one of  the best places to shoot from to show context and relationship between speaker and audience. When available, this is an exceptional perspective. It gives viewers of the photograph a contextual relationship between speaker and audience, as well as a strong emotional take on the energy in [...]

First Breath – First Impression

Whether it’s a first breath, a first impression, or the first words spoken to your audience, the beginning of a speech is critical to the success of a presenter. World class executive speech coach, Patricia Fripp says it all, “the first 30 seconds (of your talk) has ripple effects; what happens during that time can make or break a meeting.” Years of event photography have taught me well.  You never know when [...]

Make a Memorable Entrance

Call it the opening before the opening. Whether it’s from the eyes of the audience or the eyes of an event photographer, a professional speaker’s presentation begins the moment they walk on stage. Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson knows all about this when he makes his grand entrance. Body language, attire, and the strut in his step, speaks volumes for him before he even speaks a word. My experience in conference and convention [...]

In Memory of Dr Paul Farmer

In memory of Dr. Paul Farmer, an extraordinary man who dedicated his life to improve healthcare in underserved regions around the world. In 1987, Paul Farmer established Partners in Health, a global non-profit committed to “bringing the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them, and to serve as an antidote to despair.” He and his colleagues pioneered innovative, community-based treatment strategies, to deliver high-quality [...]

Desmond Tutu

The world lost a great leader today with the passing of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a human rights activist who worked tirelessly for peace around the world. In 1984 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in resolving and ending apartheid in South Africa. I met and photographed Tutu at the invitation of another great leader for peace, Tony Crawford, who arraigned for the archbishop to speak to the students at [...]

Dancing Under a Haunted Sky

This month Oregon Humanities choose one of my Architecture of the Universe photographs for the cover of their quarterly magazine. The image is a confluence of my love for photography, nature and physics. The dance is my creative process at its best - where attention, imagination and planning met for a night under the stars two summers ago. All images and content Copyright 2019 Adam Bacher.  Absolutely no usage without prior consent. [...]

Rites of Passage

A ritual of change is the hallmark of a rite of passage, as we transition from one stage of life to another.  Being born is the first rite of passage for all of us, and big one for the new parents too. When my first daughter was born, I was so overwhelmed with emotion I couldn’t hold the camera to take a photo. When my second was born I was better prepared. [...]

Monuments on the National Mall – Washington DC

Passions run deep on all sides of the political spectrum.  And a hallmark of our country is the ability to freely express them.  No politics here.  Just a passion for beauty and a desire to share.  Behold the Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument and the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial. Enjoy! All images and content Copyright 2019 Adam Bacher.  Absolutely no usage without prior consent. As [...]

Burn Baby Burn – The Rise of Mega Fires

To burn or not to burn? That is the question fire ecologist Paul Hessburg poses to audiences in small towns across the western United States. I photographed him for a Weather Channel feature story, Oregon Megafire Man, in John Day, Oregon.  There he spoke about the rise of Mega Fires in the western United States, and what we can do to combat them. Paul [...]

Some Head Shots are for the Birds

Not your average executive head shot, but if you knew Ravens, you know they would be the first to claim executive status. Ravens are smart, cunning and mischievous.  Their brains are more similar to mammals and primates than to other birds.  Flying monkeys is an apt metaphor. Spend enough time with them and their personalities become apparent. From my experience, interactions are distinctly personal.   I’m also fascinated by the similarities between portraits I’ve [...]
