In memory of Dr. Paul Farmer, an extraordinary man who dedicated his life to improve healthcare in underserved regions around the world.

In 1987, Paul Farmer established Partners in Health, a global non-profit committed to “bringing the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them, and to serve as an antidote to despair.” He and his colleagues pioneered innovative, community-based treatment strategies, to deliver high-quality health care in resource-poor settings.

Paul Farmer passed away yesterday, on the grounds of a hospital and university he helped establish in Butaro, Rwanda. Farmer was instrumental in rebuilding Rwanda’s healthcare system after its devastating genocide in 1994.

I worked with Partners in Health, in Rwanda, to help promote the clinics in the Butaro area, and to document the construction of the hospital and university.

Paul Farmer was a brilliant, unassuming, and compassionate person. His work bettered the lives of countless people around the world. The photos above were taken in Rwanda and represent a small slice of the people who’s the lives he touched. Farmer is not pictured in these photos.
